Flat vs. Embossed?
Embossed vacuum seal bags have small air channels that allow the suction-type vacuum sealer to draw air out of the bag from the lower bag without collapsing on itself and trapping air. These vacuum sealers (like the Vac 'n Seal Elite pictured below) have the bag on the outside of the machine, and the open end is placed over a slot that creates the vacuum. They look like this kind of machine. So, the embossed pattern is necessary for the bags to vacuum properly.
Flat vacuum seal bags, on the other hand, are used inside a chamber vacuum sealer. These vacuum sealers vacuum the complete chamber, including the bag and contents inside, so no embossed air channels are needed to suck the air from the lower portion of the bag. These machines typically look like the OP10 chamber vacuum sealer below.

Best vacuum bags and they're compostable!
These are the best vacuum bags, and I can now get them on Amazon!!! I've been using these compostable vacuum bags for over a year now. I found them on Amazon, but they wouldn't ship to California. They are now certified and able to ship to California. I had checked with our city offices and was assured they were OK for our yard waste composting pickup, so I was ordering them from the manufacturer. There is one thing about these bags: When you order them from the manufacturer, there are two types. Those with a textured side and those without the texturing. If you were to get the ones without the texturing, they would only be usable in a chamber vacuum, which is what I have. But if you have a suction vacuum machine, you need the ones with texturing. Amazon has the ones with texturing. If you want to remove plastic from your life, this is a good start. Also, I use these like zip-closure bags by using a GripStic with them. They are actually easier than zip-closure bags this way.

Worked with our Food Saver
Vacuum bags! Bags of the future! These have to be one of the best inventions that ever came along. Not only do they help keep our food fresh, but they are great for storing food in the freezer too. At first, I was worried that these bags would be too large for our food saver, but as promised, they absolutely work with all vacuum sealers. We tried them with our leftovers for freezing and it worked perfectly. And… there’s 50 of them! No more unrolling and cutting and hoping we didn’t cut too small. Now we have these prepped and ready eco-friendly bags ready to help keep our food as fresh as the day we cooked it. This is a must have product for anyone that does a lot of cooking and storing of their food. Its great for those large leftover meals or even just to help make your lettuce last a little longer. I would definitely order this product again.

Awesome!
Humans consume a credit card's worth of plastic every week. So we try to minimize use of plastics in our home and kitchen. So I was delighted to find these compostable vacuum seal bags. The product description said that they were compatible with chamber vacuum sealer so I took a chance and ordered them. The texture is a little different than the conventional plastic bags, hard to describe but thinner, and a little more like cellophane. One side is translucent and the other is more transparent. Though neither side is as completely clear as regular plastics bags. I loaded a few up with smoked pulled pork and then ran them in my Avid Armour sealer. They worked just as well as plastic bags.

So convenient, and a great value
This review is for the Vesta Precision Compostable Vacuum Sealer Bags, 8" x 12" 50 Count, Eco-Friendly, Heavy-Duty Food Storage Bags, BPA-Free, for Storage, Meal Prep or Sous Vide. These bags are so much more convenient than using the rolls, and it speeds up the process of breaking down bulk packages into serving sizes for freezing. These bags are a little on the thin side, but they work just fine for food storage. I wouldn't use them for storing items with rigid edges or boxed items, but I ordered them for meat, and portioning out various pasta dishes I make at home. For that, they work great and seal just as well as the stuff I get in the roll. Nowhere in the listing or on the packaging, does it mention how many mil the thickness is, but it's definitely less than 1 mil.In some cases, a lot of material is wasted, since the size can't be selected, but this would be the equivalent of a 50-foot roll, which would cost way more than this. That makes this a great value. I pay about $9 for a 15-foot roll, so this is substantially less expensive. Even if it were the same price, the convenience would still make it a better value for me.Overall, I would definitely recommend these, and I will definitely be ordering more.I just want to point out that these are COMMERCIALLY biodegradable, which means that they won't decompose if you throw them in your trash or bury them. It requires a special biological treatment at a specialized facility, so don't toss these in your composter.

very thin bags, never got them to work with my vacuum machine
This review is for the Compostable Vacuum Sealer Bags, 11" x 16" 50 Count, Eco-Friendly, Heavy-Duty Food Storage Bags, BPA-Free, for Storage, Meal Prep or Sous Videfrom the V Vesta Precision Store. These bags are thinner than the other vacuum bags I have. I have not had very good luck getting these to work well with my vacuum sealer. I’ve tried pulling and taping the bags tight on the sealer. I’ve put them in the freezer to make them stiffer. I’ve cut them in half to reduce the volume, thinking that maybe they were too big for my machine to get all the air out. But nothing has really worked. The bag wrinkles up no matter what I do and I believe this doesn’t allow the vacuum machine to get a good seal and get the air out, or actually seal the bag well.

Not as durable as commercial grade bags but good enough for most uses
These compostable bags are a bit flimsy in their material compared to the traditional (non-compostable) bags I’m used to using. The thinner material is more flexible, and this actually makes for a tighter seal on soft items like meat and cheese, but it also means the bag isn’t as strong or resistant to tearing as other bags. Depending on what you need vacuum bags for, you might be a little bit limited with these bags. The convenience of having pre-cut bags that are already sealed on one end makes these is helpful for longer sealing sessions and bulk buys.I sealed some hard and soft objects to test these: like cheese, meat, and popcorn kernels, and these bags did pretty well. I torture tested the sealed popcorn bags (compostable bags) vs the sealed ice cube bag (other brand) by dropping them off of the side of my counter and letting them fall onto the wood floor, 5 times each. I then dropped the sealed bags from 8 feet high, a few times each. Both compostable bags sealed with popcorn kernels failed and got pinholes, losing their protective seal. The competitor brand held up and still has its seal. I feel that ice is a more difficult test, so the stronger bag had the more difficult handicap, and it still won.I know that this test might seem a bit unrealistic, but if you like to buy bulk items and keep a well-stocked pantry, I’d be careful with letting any of these sealed bags fall off of your shelves. They might lose their seal or spill. I’d use these for freezing meat, and sealing up things like cheese and soft items after cold smoking them, but I’d be wary of sealing up anything with a exposed bones, anything that’s already frozen, or very solid objects that don’t deform under pressure.

FYI: These bags have a best buy date 18 months from Production date 📆
I purchased these bags for Sous Vide as I am really enjoying them and the convenience of having slide out bags out of a box instead of rolls of bags to use on my vacuum sealer. They seem a little thinner than my current bags, however are 100% Air tight and hold a good seal. I love that one of the sides comes pre-sealed and they also have these little tear tabs to quickly open up the bag at the bottom but are not easily openable or tear-ible, which is probably a great thing. I cooked some chicken breast but the size of 8" x 12" are a wee bit too small for the pichana steak I was going also place and cook in these. Today when getting out some more bags I noticed these do have a best buy date of 18 months from production date. This might be a concern as my older bags are probably several years old now. I just thought it would be important to mention to others this concern as I did not see it listed anywhere in the description of the product. I do like that they are biodegradable ♻️ but I guess if you do not plan on using at least 1 bag per week and using them up within roughly a year, I would probably advise to use the non-biodegradable ones. I ordered mine in November 2024 and was produced in July 2024 (so I already lost 4 months of their useful life) 😔 All in all, these do a perfect job for Sous Vide and for freezer storage but my concern for the usefulness of the bags after their best buy date 📅 leaves me a bit concerned. 💡

Nice vacuum sealer bags which claim to be "compostable"
Compares to -OEM Rolls: https://amzn.to/3D5Ns6yOEM Bags: https://amzn.to/41p4UNxThis set of vacuum bags came fairly well packaged. However, there were 2 bags that had unusable ends, they could simply be trimmed an 1" shorter, no big deal. The textured air channels are rectangular rather than diamond shape like the "Food Saver" brand bags. The plastic color is visibly different and hopefully compostable as claimed. No problems vacuuming, or sealing. Functions as would OEM.

Pricey, but they work. Time will tell on durability and compostability
I got these more out of curiosity than anything else. How could a bag be good for long term storage of food items and compostable? Time will tell on how they do for long term storage and how well they compost, but I can say how they work as vacuum bags. The first bag I tried failed miserably in my cheap Chinese vacuum sealer. It didn't clear correctly and it didn't seal. Not good. I tried a second bag and it worked like a charm. The only difference was that the first bag was placed in the sealer smooth side up. The second was placed with the textured side up. It shouldn't make a difference, but it sure did. One nice feature, in addition to the composability of the bags, is the little notch cut in them to allow for easy opening. These bags are small and seem to have a slightly lower capacity than other bags of the same size. These bags a pretty pricey at $.32 each. Most bags of this size are under $.10 each. All in all, if you really want to compost your used vacuum bags, these should be a great option. If not, there are cheaper alternatives that work as well.

Do something good for the planet!
I’m really impressed with these Compostable Vacuum Sealer Bags! They’re a great eco-friendly option, and I love that they’re compostable yet still feel sturdy and heavy-duty. At 6" x 10", they’re the perfect size for most of my food storage needs, whether I’m vacuum sealing or cooking sous vide. What’s even better is that they’re BPA-free and totally safe for food, which gives me extra peace of mind. It’s so nice to have a sustainable option that doesn’t feel like I’m sacrificing quality. If you’re looking to cut down on plastic waste but still want something functional, these are definitely worth a try!

These are great
I was skeptical, but these work great! I’ve had no issues with sealing and the cost is reasonable.

Bags break open whenever you reheat food
These bags used to be amazing, but the recent batch we got has been horrible. They break open whenever you reheat the food saved in them and it ruins the food. Worst bags

Product integrity
While I haven’t used these on food yet. I have test sealed a book. And the vacuum seal is holding. Our city has a drop off for industrially compostable items, so I feel good using these.
